An insight into being an Entrepreneur
To celebrate World Entrepreneur Day join me as I ask Ed, our Managing Director 10 questions based on first hand experience about being an Entrepreneur. I'm sure you will agree, that no book or guide can compare, we hope this insight into being your own boss, the wisdom and knowledge shared inspires you or even better supports you on your journey towards becoming one yourself.
Why did you start your own business?
There are several reasons I chose the unconventional route of entrepreneurship. Buying and selling unique items was something I found a passion for whilst at University, when I started selling vintage clothing via Ebay. Its name 'Yester Wear' was in fact where 'Yester Home's' name originated from. I have also grown up around my parents having their own business, my Dad would create patterns and make hardware in his own foundry and my mom would sell them via our local market and car boot sales.
What advice would you give to someone starting their own business?
Starting point
WING IT.. I'm only kidding. I'd recommend asking yourself 3 very important questions! What is your mission, vision and real reason 'why'.
Google is your best friend
From the early stages, through to this very day being your own boss can feel overwhelming. Research, research, research!
Teamwork makes the dream work
This includes having an office dog but ideally not a Dachshund that barks on repeat with a larger than life ego (we've made this mistake twice now). Since day one, I have consciously formed a network of support and drawn off the strength of others. My customer service ladies have a wealth of experience in providing top tier assistance from previous roles, my general manager is equipped with the skillset to ensure our workplace is as safe as possible for staff. Ashley also questions and challenges my decisions, which in turn has helped me develop a growth mindset.
Over the last decade this alone has freed more of my time up to focus on strategy and growth.
How do you deal with self-doubt?
My key strategies for conquering fears include, doing enough research to build confidence but equally never over-stepping the mark and always being sincere enough to voice it if I simply don't know the answer.
What qualities do you think every entrepreneur should possess?
Being adaptable and willing to learn new systems and processes is key. Patience, is definitely important when perfecting product ranges. To be a good leader, I'd say an ability to trust others to deliver and to say no if the invitation appears to be a distraction to your ultimate goal.
What has been the most challenging time or experience?
During Covid, with everyone at home focusing on renovation projects we had to adapt exponentially to manage demand. Processes including stock control became essential overnight and the logistics of a warehouse move came into play. Furloughing all of our staff compounded this, as during April 2020 it was just me and my parents packing orders.
What would you change about your business journey if you could go back?
I wish I would have invested in more software earlier on, as it makes life easier and helps with business progression.
What is your favourite part of being an entrepreneur?
Honestly, being able to give our hard working staff a pay rise year on year. We have recently achieved 'Living Wage Employer' status which we choose to pay above. I'd also say having the flexibility to be present for family during times of need.
At what point did you look at your business and consider it a success?
When we were approached about job vacancies as the lady had purchased and loved our products, but also heard locally what a great business Yester is to work for.
How does your business look different now vs. when you first started?
Yester Home's first premise in 2011
The staff break hub established in December 2020
What will you never compromise on with your business?
Ensuring our customers receive the highest possible quality of hardware and homeware for the price bracket.
How do you set your business apart from others in your industry?
We pride ourselves on having a responsive, helpful team at the end of the phone and also getting orders turned around as quickly as possible. BUT most importantly, responding to things correctly when they don't quite go to plan.
Where do you see your business in five years? Ten?
Now I'm surrounded by a robust team, my list of ever-changing goals and aspirations can take centre stage. I have BIG dreams for the future and would love to establish distribution centres in the states and Canada.
